According to a report by Reuters, on Tuesday, Georgia became the fifth US state to outlaw abortion after a doctor can detect a fetal heartbeat.
Georgia Governor Brian Kemp, a Republican, said as he signed the bill, “Our job is to do what is right, not what is easy.”
Reuters reports that Kentucky, Mississippi and Ohio have all enacted heartbeat laws since mid-March, joining Iowa which passed a similar measure last year.
Courts have reportedly blocked the Iowa and Kentucky laws, while the others are facing legal challenges.
The American Civil Liberties Union of Georgia and the Center for Reproductive Rights reportedly vowed to sue in order to counter the new law.
