A German woman who pretended to be a wealthy heiress in New York was sentenced to four to 12 years in prison on Thursday.
28-year-old Anna Sorokin was born in Russia before moving to Germany as a teenager and New York City as a young adult. In the US, she went by the name of Anna Delvey.
Prosecutors in the Manhattan district attorney’s office said Sorokin defrauded others of about $275,000 and falsely told others that she had 60 million euros in assets.
They say she used forged bank statements to seek a loan of $22 million from a bank. She received a $100,000 loan, which prosecutors said she never repaid.
She used $30,000 of the loan to cover her bills at the 11 Howard hotel, where she lived.
Prosecutors added that she deposited bad checks for a total of $15,000 in an account with Signature Bank.
