A federal jury said that the popular Monsanto weed-killer Roundup was a “substantial factor” in causing a man’s cancer.
Roundup’s active ingredient is a widely-used agricultural pesticide called glyphosate, which has been tentatively linked to cancer.
The verdict represents a major landmark in an ongoing legislative battle against Monsanto (recently acquired by Bayer).
Bayer issued a statement to Business Insider stating it was “disappointed with the jury’s initial decision.”
Bayer went on to say, “We are confident the evidence in phase two will show that Monsanto’s conduct has been appropriate.”
