All 50 US states have ‘right to farm‘ laws on their books, but nine states are trying to strengthen them even more.
HuffPost reports agriculture lobbyists have pushed for a host of new state laws to protect farms from litigation.
Pig farmers are routinely sued over foul smells, loud noises and declining water quality.
The push comes after years of nuisance lawsuits the agriculture industry blames for decimating some livestock producers.
Much of the action has been spurred by legal activity in North Carolina, home to 9 million hogs and 2,400 swine operations — and the pig waste that goes with them.
The new laws will make it even more difficult to bring such lawsuits against farmers. Some prohibit all but the nearest neighbors from filing a claim.
